Aug. 28th, 2010 11:58 pmDay 29 - A song from your childhood
Dan Crow, "Oops." This song (the pumpkin pie verse) and "Silver Bells" were the two that made singing harmony click for me. Simple thirds, nothing fancy, but still a triumph for little me.

Aug. 27th, 2010 07:59 amDay 28 - A song that makes you feel guilty
The Dixie Chicks, "Goodbye Earl." Ten years ago this month, my sister and I decided we needed to get out of the hospital where the rest of our family was gathered. I don't remember where we went, just that she was driving the black Mustang (or was it a Cavalier?) and chortling about this song. Until then, I'd only heard of it, not actually heard it. At the time, it felt good to get my mind off my grandfather. Now, all I can think when I hear it is that I somehow need to apologize to someone for being so inappropriate and flippant. Telling clouds you're sorry just isn't the same. And sometime soon, I need it to rain.

Aug. 26th, 2010 05:26 pmDay 26 - A song that you can play on an instrument
Once upon a time, I took piano lessons. I did NOT get along with the teacher or her style of teaching, and I never really developed a positive association with the instrument like everyone had hoped I would. So of the few recognizable songs I ever learned to play, pretty much nothing remains but my memory of teaching myself to play them. ("Stay" by Shakespear's Sister comes to mind; not many others do.) And now that I'm old and bitter, I'm going to have to go with "Chopsticks" or "Heart & Soul." I can actually play both the melody and the accompaniment (not at the same time) for the second one! Woohoo!
Day 27 - A song that you wish you could play
Vienna Teng, "Harbor." This could have fit in many other categories, but I'm putting it here.

it's tradition, that makes it okay
Aug. 24th, 2010 06:59 pmDay 25 - A song that makes you laugh
"Weird Al" Yankovic, "Weasel Stomping Day." The weasel noises never fail to make me giggle. I don't know what this says about me. Though I could also have picked "Ode to a Superhero." "And he's riding around on that glider thing/And he's throwing that weird pumpkin bomb/And he's wearing that dumb Power Rangers mask/But he's scarier without it on." We're both glad there's an instrumental bridge after that stanza, because there's no way we'd ever make it to the "Laaa la laa diddy daaah" on time.

Aug. 23rd, 2010 05:06 pmDay 23 - A song that you want to play at your wedding
U2, "All I Want Is You." Actually did play it at my wedding, for the first dance. We provided all the music, which was sort of a snafu; we'd been told the sound system would hook up to an iPod, but never got to test it. So, on the day, of course it didn't work. We were extremely grateful that we'd thought to burn and bring mix CDs. And just as grateful that the playlists had been organized by artist-first-name, when it turned out that the guy in the booth didn't know how to hit shuffle. :p We also included "The Lady of Shalott" and "The Highwayman" by Loreena McKennitt (about three people actually listened closely enough to know what they were hearing, which was amusing), "Jackie's Strength" by Tori Amos (which I would have used as this item were it not for the item below), selections from the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, and the end-theme version of "Honey" from the CCS single collection, plus a bunch of stuff I can't remember at the moment.
Day 24 - A song that you want to play at your funeral
Tori Amos, "Happy Phantom." This is the list item that took me the longest to settle on. There's no shortage of death songs in the world, but some of them are so specific. I mean, I'm not a teenager in tragic love, so there goes what seems like half the library. And for a lot of the rest you have to know how you're going to die. Which usually only happens if you're clairvoyant or suicidal, and I don't plan on being either anytime soon; but I do like to cover my bases. So, if I'm killed in a car accident, especially if I'm the only one who dies from it, I'd like to amend this to "Passage" by Vienna Teng.

Aug. 19th, 2010 11:50 pmDay 20 - A song that you listen to when you’re angry
Meat Loaf, "Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back." 'Nuff said. Although actually I don't really alter my playlist for anger, as I'm usually trying to calm down, or at least get my mind out of "stuck in angry" mode. But when I want to scream about the General Unfairness of Life, this is the one.

Aug. 18th, 2010 07:45 pmTwo days' worth again. Whee.
Day 18 - A song that you wish you heard on the radio
Thea Gilmore, "Call Me Your Darling." Not sure if it might have gotten some airplay when it was new, or in places that aren't here, because I haven't done much radio listening anywhere but public places for a few years now. But I haven't heard it anywhere but my own collection yet, and DO WANT.
Day 19 - A song from your favorite album
Another "I have to choose?!?!?" moment. And another round of ultimately fruitless statistical analysis. I don't think there's such a thing as an all-purpose-listening album without a song I find meh, unless it's something like the Mirrormask soundtrack that has a variety of types and tempos of music with very few words. ("Sausages!!")
So I'm going to go with "Where's Neil When You Need Him?" because it's my big gun for getting myself to write. (Consolation prizes go to "American Doll Posse" and "American Idiot.") And with "Ravenstar" by Lunascape, which should have been the end-credits song for Stardust if the world had any taste at all.

Aug. 16th, 2010 10:52 pmUggghhhh. I am so sick of putting up with the neighbors' cigarette addictions. It's bad enough that they all smoke (you can see the smokestains on the back wall of the building, above every window and back door in all the apartments around ours); it's worse in summer, when airflow is a precious commodity. We can only have one of our front windows open, really, as the next-door neighbor is a retired heavy smoker and prefers to satisfy her craving on the front porch. Tonight, however, she's smoking in her bathroom, which is mirrored across the wall with ours. It seeps through the wall, into our cupboards, and into our air. And as if that weren't enough, one of the upstairs smokers (I swear at least one of the kids is into it; there's no other way to explain the temporal distribution) is going at it in the living room and it's seeping down through the floor. It makes me want to send a shark after them.
Day 17 - A song that you hear often on the radio
Taylor Swift, "Love Story." Every frakking time I go to Kohl's. Which has been more often than usual, lately, given my need for inexpensive clothing and the situation with Target.

Aug. 15th, 2010 11:54 pmDay 16 - A song that you used to love but now hate
Atlantic Starr, "Always." This was actually my first-ever favorite pop song, when I was first permitted to have a radio. I'm now appalled at my younger self's taste. There are very few old favorites I actually hate, rather than just mildly dislike; this isn't the worst of them, I'm sure, but I can't think of any others.

even if i lost sanity
Aug. 14th, 2010 06:00 pmWeird Al concert last night, awesome as usual. It was at the OC Fair, so we had our yearly allotment of fair food beforehand. There was this thing called zucchini nachos that was curls of batter-fried zucchini topped with nacho cheese, bacon, and jalapeños...made a perfect counterpart, nutrition-wise, to the chicken kabobs the same booth was selling. We did not go for the chocolate-covered bacon, nor for the fried butter (looked like it was some kind of batter/churro deal, but still ewwwwww forever). The most amazing part? Bottled water cost less than at a movie theater. o_0
Day 15 - A song that describes you
Alanis Morissette, "That I Would Be Good." Someone asked a bunch of people in college for self-descriptive songs, and it took me a looong time to come up with this one. 10 years later, it hasn't lost any accuracy.

dijon catch-up
Aug. 13th, 2010 10:17 amI swear I was thinking about posting yesterday's meme installment last night. I blame the lasagna for sabotaging my memory, although it could have been a kitty high. I spent the day at my parents', showing my mom some computer stuff; and the cats actually sort of half-ass warmed up to my presence. It really is hard to believe they're 18 years old...at least until you go to pet them and feel how skinny they've gotten. Doesn't seem to bother them, though, which I guess is the important part.
Day 13 - A song that is a guilty pleasure
It's hard for me to come up with songs I feel I need to explain liking, just because I don't generally feel a need to explain liking much of anything. Not even anchovies. But with William Shatner feat. Joe Jackson, "Common People," there's just something about Captain Kirk emoting about roaches that's irresistible to me. But I'm well aware that it's not really everyone's cup of tea, so when it comes up in public situations I usually skip past it.
Day 14 - A song that no one would expect you to love
Rammstein, "Engel." It's pretty much the antithesis of the rest of my standard playlist. Originally added because of the well-known AMV "Asuka Strikes," but has stayed there because it actually helps me focus, and the lyrics are appealing. It helps to have a husband who's familiar with German!

Day 12 - A song from a band you hate
I'm going to up the ante on this and offer a song I love from a band whose music I otherwise dislike: "Cathedrals" by Jump, Little Children. Sadly, I found out that I didn't generally like them when I bought the album because of this song. :p But IMHO, it was worth at least half the price of the CD. If I'm ever anywhere that it's on karaoke, I'll be breaking my no-karaoke rule. Enthusiastically.

Aug. 10th, 2010 10:58 pmDay 11 - A song from your favorite band
Ack! I have to choose?? Okay...factor in length of time I've followed them, how fast I pick up their new albums, how many songs are OMG vs. meh, how good they are in concert, how many times I've seen them in concert and how far I've gone to do it...and it comes out a tie still. I've followed Counting Crows and Gin Blossoms since high school, but don't have the latest from CC (didn't know they had anything new after Hard Candy, in shameful fact) and have barely seen any GB concerts. The Wallflowers have grown to really suck in concert, I haven't listened through the last Barenaked Ladies album, I'm not partial to the Goo Goo Dolls stuff where the vocals aren't by Rzeznik, and early work from Vertical Horizon and Green Day doesn't really grab me. Grrrr.
Plan B: ask the husband. He says Goo Goo Dolls. So, I'll pick "Sympathy" for contrast with the last one. Also I've wanted to use the subject line as a journal title for a long time now.

Aug. 9th, 2010 10:17 pmDay 10 - A song that makes you fall asleep
Tori Amos, "I can't see New York." Generally, there's no such thing as a song that will put me to sleep. Tori in concert, however, has this tendency to stretch out a song by sloooowwwwing iiiiit dooooowwwwwn until you want to scream. Or snore. Her latest album sounds like it's designed to showcase that, but the time she performed this one (which is a 7-minute song to start with and got stretched to probably 12 or so) at Gibson/Universal, I think it actually was the one that had me nodding off. It might have been "Carbon," which I love; but as that one doesn't bore me on the album, I'm plugging my ears, lalalaaaaa.

Aug. 9th, 2010 12:04 amDay 09 - A song that you can dance to
Kaiser Chiefs, "I Predict a Riot." I didn't realize until I started looking through my collection how little dance-y music is in it. And it's been so long since I danced to anything other than a slow song at a wedding that I can't remember what the DJs used to play. So I'm going with something I would dance to if it were played in the right context, and that might actually have a chance of getting played.
ETA: I can't believe I forgot the week I had to restrain myself from faux-belly-dancing to Green Day's "Peacemaker." Nearly broke a few dishes using it to break the tedium of washing them.

Dreamed last night that I'd gotten invited to some kind of elite pan-fandom meetup to celebrate strong female lead characters. The person doing the inviting, and the introducing of me to the rest of the group, unfortunately neglected to tell me that cosplay was also on the menu. Femslash-friendly cosplay. The rest of the attendees didn't seem to mind that I was in street clothes, kind of like being in the sort of dream where nobody cares that you're naked in the middle of a lecture hall. So I thought, Hey, let's just make the best of this; and since there was already an Aeryn there, I started channeling Ivanova. I was actually looking forward to seeing people's interpretations of their characters (most of whom were supposed to be from comics) and was quite disappointed to wake up after just a few minutes of talking.
Day 08 - A song that you know all the words to
Well, I've got a lot to choose from here! I used to be very proud of knowing all the lyrics to "America the Beautiful," mainly because I've met only one other person who did (and she's a music teacher); but these days some bits have slipped out between the teeth of the steel trap. I still do know all the words to "American Pie," and to "The Saga Begins" as well. Weird Al's "Virus Alert" is more of a be-proud-you-can-sing-all-the-notes song, as is the Joni Mitchell version of "Big Yellow Taxi." But for complexity, beauty, and obscurity all rolled into one, I need to go with Aimee Mann's "Invisible Ink." It sounds longer than it is, but I still consider it a good one to have in the RAM.

Day 07 - A song that reminds you of a certain event
R.E.M., "Electrolite." Someone had their speakers pointed out the window when I moved into campus housing as a freshman, and this was what I heard when first walking in with my stuff.
Could also use Semisonic, "Closing Time." Cornily enough, it got played at a party near the end of my sophomore year, when I was rather unhappily with someone who wasn't
kelson and had a pretty good idea who I'd rather have take me home.
