My Virtual Villagers traumatized me earlier this evening. I had set the game running and quit it to do other stuff, something I don't usually do. When I fired it back up, I had just enough time to notice that my most elderly elder had died...right in the spot where the kids like to gather for games of tag.

...Yeah. All 20-odd of them. It was a very bad day to be Tuana.

There was no time to assign any adults to burial duty; I'd just have dropped them on a kid and triggered either story time or lessons, both of which take place in the same spot. I just sat there, horrified, until one of the adults waded into the commotion and brought out the remains. It didn't even occur to me until hours later that I could probably have picked up the little skeleton and moved it somewhere else. Anywhere else.

:shudder: Not letting it run while closed anymore. Like, ever.

I am so FUCKING MAD at Microsoft Word right now it should be hopping a Greyhound to New Jersey. When I got my new Palm, I shelled out for the portable version of Word so I could write things with some length, and that's where I've been tap-typing my recipe list in during lunch. I come home, sync it, fix the formatting, re-sync, and take it back to work the next day. Tonight I decided one of my collector binders should contain only recipes I'd entered, and spent the last 1 1/2 hours typing in something like 150 recipe titles. I chose Save from the File menu, closed the document, closed Word, and synced. Then, just to check, I opened the file on the Palm. It was exactly the same as it had been at 9:00. 2 1/2 hours earlier.

So, here's the shell game of the week: where the FUCKING HELL is my FILE??????

I have searched hidden files and folders, found cached copies that look exactly like the normal copies, and am coming up enragedly clueless. The file had a name when I saved it, and was not saved as Doc1, untitled, Word, or anything of that sort. (I checked.) I'm sure it was saved, because Word wouldn't have let me quit if it hadn't been. All I can think of is that Documents to Go decided, for some incredibly stupid-ass reason, that a backup copy saved at 9:03 pm was preferable to a file last edited at 11:25 pm, and overwrote with the old data. If so, STUPID. FUCKING. PIECE. OF. SHIT.

That Greyhound better have room for two.

I've sort of dropped off the face of the earth where LJ is concerned in the last little while. Part of that is attributable to Puzzle Pirates. It's not that it takes up all my waking hours; I just don't want to keep posting tales of pillages that really don't interest anyone who currently reads this journal on a regular basis. Part of it is a gradual and general withdrawing from my usual haunts on the web that's been progressing for at least three months. I stopped reading webcomics for a huge chunk of time a while ago, caught up sometime in July or August, and then stopped again a week or two later. Everything else has sort of followed. I just don't find myself interested at this juncture.

The rest of it is due to circumstances beyond my control. )

In short, out of sight, out of mind. [livejournal.com profile] kelson keeps me pretty well informed regarding happenings among you lot, so don't worry that I'll be behind when next we meet. Just keep in mind that I'll be clueless about the latest memes and weird stories, and humor me. Please?
