I don't understand the current fad of long dark hair with stringy blonde highlights. It's expensive to get (the girl in the office who just got it done said most places run $150) and a hassle to maintain, and it looks like someone either applied the blonde with a very wide-toothed comb or ran bleachy fingers through your hair. I remember when I was much younger, with much shorter hair, "frosted" hairdos were in with my mom's age group and she and our family hairdresser were raving about how lucky I was that my hair looked that way naturally. Back then, coloring one's hair was about achieving a look some people had naturally, be it color, highlights, or lack of gray. Now, it's about vanity and the weird. Nobody in the world has natural strings of blonde in hair that dark.

I'm not against playing with your looks; as the office poster child for henna, I can't really take a stand against standing out, nor do I want to. What I don't get is spending beaucoup bucks on a permanent change that's been skewed from ostensibly bettering one's looks into just messing around with what's possible. Henna, jewelry, tattoos, and nail polish were never meant to look like you'd been born with them. Makeup can be used for either purpose and, with the exception of permanent makeup (which makes my skin crawl just thinking about it), is temporary and usually relatively inexpensive. Hair, though, is usually there already and can be a powerful attractive factor. If the game of beauty is about attracting the opposite sex, are there people who think that doing something weird-looking and unnatural to one of their attractive attributes is attractive? Or is it just to play around? It's kind of like nipple piercing or genital tattooing as far as I'm concerned. If you do it to be attractive, you better make sure you like what you're going to attract.
