fruit part 2: carb-a-licious
Jun. 1st, 2004 01:35 pmWe went out to
kelson's grandparents' house over the weekend and came back with tons of fresh fruit from their garden. They have vines of blackberries, boysenberries, youngberries and raspberries, and a blueberry bush. And everything was absolutely loaded. We covered half the kitchen table with baskets of berries and there were still a good number of ripe berries out there. And this isn't mentioning the pattypan squash, the lemons and limes, the bell peppers, or the apricots. Yow.
So I've been on a baking spree. I made mixed berry pie for the Farscape night on Sunday and blueberry muffins last night (found good recipe, will make more if well-received), and we have a pie pan of various blackishberries, a handful of raspberries, and about half the blueberries left. I also made myself a miniature apricot crisp for breakfast yesterday, which was quite good. And incredibly nostalgic; I grew up with an apricot tree in the backyard and many summers were spent picking, sorting, and jam-ifying. It's like a little bit of sweet-tart sunshine that turns me eight years old again.
Picked up a strawberry plant (a really baby one, but it claims to do well in summer heat and it's already putting out runners) at Target yesterday. They did not have a strawberry pot in the place. I had to draw in the air with my hands several times before the employee in the Kababayan shirt understood what kind of pot I was talking about. Jeez. Call me old-fashioned, but I think a Garden Center employee ought to know something more about gardening than that it involves plants and dirt. We did find two more huge pots for the tomatoes, which are going to turn out tricky to transplant since they've started flowering. At least they're doing well.

(It was one of the few
edible dishesdorm foods I liked at Cambridge.)So, now comes the real question...are there enough blueberries left for blueberry scones?

With rent the way it is, turnover rates for clerks is outrageous in LA. I made the newbie mistake of trying to get a gift certificate at Fry's...only the manager knew how. 5 out of 5 surveyed Fry's clerks did not. They had all started that week. Not that I think Fry's is the best place to work, but the same seems true for the local Target.
