for public consumption
May. 24th, 2004 08:57 pmI already knew I didn't ever want to see the Nicholas Berg video. Thanks to my co-worker, I no longer need to see it. She watched it over the weekend and was describing it to another co-worker (who also didn't want to watch it) in grisly detail. Thing was, she wasn't trying to be gross; it's just her way of expressing how horrified she was. The problem with that is that, as a writer, I use my imagination on a regular enough basis that words, however clumsy and unpoetic, are sufficient to conjure a moving image out of any still. In this case, moving, screaming, and bleeding.
Two requests for the pecan gallery:
1) Please do not tell me I must see the video because I am an American. I am also a person, and I do not care what anyone says--personhood comes first. And as a person, I have the right not to enjoy seeing violence or being a vicarious witness to murder. It will not make me pro-war or anti-war, pro-Bush or anti-Bush, to watch the video. I imagine it has not made anyone else choose or change camps, either.
2) Please respect the rights of those of us who have no interest in this video. It was made, it was posted, it is our decision whether or not to view it. Some people are cognizant of the limits of their individual psyches to bear up under disturbing stimuli, and do not wish to experience the consequences of such if at all possible. We thank you for not bringing unwanted sounds and images into our sensory space, as you will thank us for continuing to be functional as a result of this self-imposed restriction.
