I've come to the realization that I tend to ship a few general types of pairings:

- Big and/or stoic guy (the protector/warrior type) and smaller-than-average girl/woman who's out of her depth
- Two people who are at least semi-professional and are, or are feeling, displaced or out of place; tragic past is a bonus
- Childhood sweethearts/friends who, barring excessive life changes, would probably still be suitable for each other as adults
- Bonus if the characters are not the central couple

I already know that my "fundamental story," the one I want to keep telling over and over, is "Beauty and the Beast," the Disney version of which might explain my being a sucker for the first ship type (there's only one instance I can recall offhand in which two appropriate non-main characters existed and I did not ship it like burning). But I can't figure out where the other pairing tropes are coming from, and it's driving me nuts right now. The second is a little more iffy; by all rights, I should ship the hell out of John/Aeryn, but I don't really...see part #4. And there just aren't many examples of the third that I can think of right now. They've been with me since at least high school, before I really got into any fandom, and show up in both my fangirling and my writing. Any ideas?
