The type of nickname usually determines my reaction. My family has an odd history of nicknames, my cousin's being Joe when her first name is Jennifer, etc.
Stace is fine for people who know me. People who've known me an hour and call me Stacers? Their deaths are quick and painless. The girl in 8th grade who tried to call me Staceroo? Not so painless.
Sometimes I call Jim "James" just to give him a separate name from what his family calls him. Do you ever go by your full name?
I use my full name at work. Or at least I try to. I usually tell people that I'm Katherine over the phone and on paper, and Katie face-to-face. There are some that just don't get it, though, and when they transfer calls to me I get a little confused silence, followed by "Uhhh.....hi, I was trying to reach Katie?"
What really irks me is the people who just arbitrarily decide I must be a Kathy, when neither I nor anyone else has ever used any nickname in their vicinity. If I had any illusions of diplomatic immunity, I'd have found out who my real friends are several times over by now.
The oblivious are inexplicable to me. You'd think they'd pick up that you don't like the Kathy. Dad used to get called "Gar" by one of his old bosses and I swear you could see my old man doing the Force choke motion behind his back every time he did, but the guy never caught on.
And maybe it's just my Irish, but mentally:
Katie=Katherine Kathy=Kathleen Kathy<>Katherine
Enh. Too bad it's work. Otherwise I could make you a "Kathy doesn't live here" t-shirt.
